As Sherman suggested you might have it wired wrong. The intermittent start position on the switch is probably the key to your problem.
I first thought you might have fried the starter solenoid in the first smoking, but if it will engage you are good.
A test light with a pointed probe is your friend along with some jumpers with small alligator clips containing in line fuse holders for testing circuits and function.
