Very similar to you although not for hire. Not quite 40 years running a saw but got my first set of chaps last year. Never had a close call before but didn't want to wait till I did. Tiredness and snow are the 2 biggest things to watch for in my opinion to prevent injuries.
The instructor may have been doing that so HE could pick up some things.
