I use this test for coils:
Hook up a spark plug wire to the coil tower, and put a spark plug on the other end of the wire. Make sure the plug body is grounded.
Hook the positive side of the coil directly to the + side of the battery. Hook the negative side of the coil to ground, but thru a turn signal flasher.
The flasher will click off and on creating one spark each time it clicks.
