The chicken pox virus is a type of herpes virus. The immunity one develops after a childhood bout of chicken pox gradually wanes over the years. So, it is not uncommon for people to get shingles when they are older, when "the virus comes out of hiding" from the body's nervous tissues.
I got the vaccine last year, I am 59.
Shingles can be dangerous depending on the location of the inflammation; a friend nearly lost his sight when he got a case that involved his eye tissue.
