My understanding is that you can only get shingles "IF" you had chicken pox. That the virus remains dormant in your body for years. The vaccine helps to reduce the period that if you get shingles the time you have it. Otherwise it could last for months if you didn't get the vaccine. My doctor recommends people over 55 get the vaccine as a precaution.
