Dana, You will have to go to a modern transmission, ie nv4500 or getrag. There is extensive info if you search the archives of the site. If the truck is nice I would rebuild what you have. It should have more than enough power. Buy a newer dodge for more frequent driving, or a car, or both, you will still be money ahead. And you can drive all three in the meantime.
