I've not replaced mine but had it out when I repaired the vacuum pump oil leak. It was fairly easy to get out. IIRC there is a bracket on the backside of either the vacuum pump or the PS that needs to be taken out plus the oil line for the vacuum pump. Not much room in there.

The PS lines are very tough and I ended up cutting them. I probably would just unscrew them further down the line instead of the cuts but they are long enough to get away with it.

I would try replacing all the fluid with some new synthetic before I would replace the pump and that may solve your issue. Seems it would at least be worth a try. =)

I also pulled the radiator to clean the fins of all the oily dirt from the breather bottle vapors. Looked really clean until I got it out and it was about 70% blocked. I would suggest getting that at the same time and while it's out adjust your steering box per the FSM. Doing that, a new set of E rated very stiff sidewall high weigh rated tires and a poly bushing for the axle end of the track bar makes mine drive like it should. Highly recommended!
