The sender uses nichrome resistance wire, and I have rewound them, using any junkyard sender as a wire donor. Wind on the same number of ohms of wire.

Geeze, I just realized why the factories use the pulsing IVR (Instrument voltage regulator). It works like a flasher, a bimetalic, that is affected by ambient temperature. Just like the modern gauges, but reverse effect? So, the IVR varies the volts with temp, so that the gauge reading does not. But that is for bi-metallic systems, not magnetic.

So, a modern bimetalic system that is inaccurate when cold, needs a new IVR. And may explain why my gauge changes from when I first start up to when the heater gets going. IVRs probably work best in the same temp range as us.

Put this epiphany in 'best of the forum'?
