I think the stiff rear springs make it twist at every dip and curb it crosses. All the bounce takes place in the front springs. Unless you usually travel loaded. So the 'stress riser', the place at the front of the spring mounts, is where the frame gets the most punishment.

On my current projecathon, I welded on some gussets on top and bottom. I don't think it shows in the pic, but the welds to frame only go lengthwise, NOT across. Crosswise welds only make a new stress riser. You want the flex spread out, not confined to one spot. NOT like your fish plate did. Too bad it didn't extend past the spring mount.
