A matchbook cover will do for a feeler gauge, and you can get the timing close by the sound and by driving it to see if it knocks, but what you really need is somebody to stand next to you and go through basic mechanics with you. It's pretty simple in person, but would sound like brain surgery to have someone try to teach it over the Internet. You'll probably want to set the idle speed and mixture at the same time.

If you know anyone who works on old (pre-~1972) rigs, they should be able to teach you, no matter what make and model they're used to. Anything that has a mechanical distributor and a regular carburetor works the same way. Hopefully he'll have a timing light, or you can afford to get your own, because even though you can time it by ear and test driving for knocking, a timing light helps you understand how the thing works.
