Hey Glen, there is a fungus that lives in the soil here that when disturbed and breathed into the lungs causes a condition known as Valley Fever. Some nasty stuff.
We lost a dog to it back in the 90's. At that time it was incurable in dogs. I think there have been some advances in vet medicine since that make it less serious but still a real problem. In humans, it can cause some real serious problems as well although not as common.
Bottom line you really don't want to breathe the dust you're kicking up out there.
