They come in sideways a lot. There's a famous picture of one that skimmed through the sky in the middle of the day, back in the 70s I think at some lake resort. There are all these people swimming and hanging out on the beach in the foreground and there's this huge bright fireball going across the sky behind them. The astronomers say if it had hit it would have left a hole like the meteor crater in Arizona. Most of the do "blow themselves up", too. They're usual rock rather than metal and when they get too hot they break into pieces which quickly break into smaller pieces. The "explosion" sound is a sonic boom not an actual explosion.

So, all of that makes sense. But clearly NASA didn't see this one coming, and if it was associated with the "scheduled" one, they never had said anything about sometimes smaller asteroids tagging along with the big ones. When it comes to conspiracy theories, though, I think it's interesting that only one of the news sites quotes some official Russian source saying that their asteroid defense system went to work and they destroyed it with a missile in the upper atmosphere. Seems like a bit of a stretch to me, but then why would they say that?
