My folks came through the Coeur d'Alenes on their honeymoon. They said all the local merchants tried to give change in silver dollars, even though the rest of the country was doing paper money by then. It was their way to support the local silver mines. The closest I've come was I got a silver certificate in change at the Albertsons in Coeur d'Alene about 10 years ago. The clerk didn't even know what it was, but when I pointed it out to her she thought it was kind of neat that it was blue instead of green. I don't suppose she'd ever even seen real silver money.

Lincoln's Silver Dollar bar in Haugan is kind of the last relic of that age. They claim they have 50,000 silver dollars in the bar and on the wall, but most of them are Eisenhower dollars. A silver dollar's worth about $30 these days, which tells you something about inflation. On the other hand, a silver dollar bought just about the same amount of gas in 1950 as it would today.
