Interesting. I think a very loose fit on the shear yoke would be a good idea too. It doesn't take too much "adhesive" of any sort to make a strong joint if the parts are tightly fitted. Here, it would be better if the joint can wobble around slightly in use and help keep the rust broken loose.

As for the improvements, I agree, but I want to first make sure I understand what was wrong with the old system. I've spent too much time undoing someone else's ill-thought-out "improvements". One improvement I always do is soldering a flexible coiled wire from the gas gauge sender arm to the mounting flange, though. Corrosion of the pivot is a common reason for old gas gauges not working, and no harm can be done by adding a continuous metallic connection.
