On all automatics I've used, you adjust the kickdown to your style of driving. Oh, some manuals give you a spec, but you can override it and set it to kickdown later or earlier. I know folks who will readjust it to kick down sooner when they are heavily loaded or pulling a trailer. They set it to kick down late when running empty for fuel economy. There are some autos that can be damaged w/o the kickdown hooked up. Ford C-4 & C-6 won't be hurt. I don't know about the 727 or 904. The worst thing would be to maladjust it so it is always kicked down.

If you want a rough starting point, traditionally on a 4-bbl it is set to kick down when the secondaries are about 1/4 to 1/3 open. But individial engines vary, and so does personal driving habits and taste.
