I once had a problem with a woodpecker family making holes in my house. A call to the Ag Extension Office brought a 4 page pamphlet describing how to deal with the problem. It mostly had silly ideas for scareing the things away. The last couple of paragraphs on the last page had the answer. After obtaining the proper permit (to deal with a bird that is distroying your house) you can nail a big ol rat trap to the house near the hole the birds made. Bait it with peanut butter just before dusk. The next morning you are guaranteed to have a woodpecker that looks something like a cartoon character hanging by his neck. The others will get the hint and leave imediately. Of course, I'd never do something like that because I believe the birds have more rights than I do as a property owner. I just let them keep on eating my house.
