I have the 98 Dodge with Cummins, and have owned it through my Dad owning two Ford Powerstrokes and now he Duramax. I can out mileage the Fords and pretty even on power with them, they may be faster out of the hole if that means anything to you. The Duramax is quieter and seems to do great on fuel. Not sure on power there yet, but I told him to get hold of the dealer and order some spare doors........I plan to blow them off if I catch him out on the flats. I have made minor mods to my engine such as 275 hp injectors, K and N filter, and 3" exhaust with Walker straight thru muffler. It'll run and it'll pull. I get around 16 mpg short tripping and up to 18 Interstate. You cannot go wrong with the Cummins. Buy in the near future or dont plan on getting a straight axle front at all. I have some unfair insight into this!!!
