A friend had a gutless M37, even though the engine had good compression. I checked the block number and it turned out to be a 218. He swapped in a 230, and it made quite a difference. The M37 is a heavy truck, and the 218, designed for a much lighter 1/2 ton WC, just wasn't up to the weight increase.
