My theory about gearing with diesels in trucks

There's nothing worse than a truck with a diesel that's a dog in the top gear. Plus, I figure ANY 4X4 pickup will benefit in terms of ride, ground clearance, offroad traction and maybe even load capacity with larger than stock tires. Clearance of tires is of course an issue.
Therefore, I figure it's always best to get the shortest (numerically highest) gears with any diesel that comes with an overdrive transmission, and then adjust to perfection with increases in tire diameter.
Unless the following situation applies: you never haul/tow heavy loads, always drive on the flat, never in mountains, and you have a powerhouse motor and want to drive 80-90 mph getting the best possible mileage. Then the taller gears might be the thing to do.
