Any time one can get an extra gear with a diesel, take it! The Cummins is a great engine; if my 7.3/Banks turbo in my 88 F350 crewcab (all Charlie'd up with 11.00R16s, 4.88s, lockers, 2 hydraulic winches, air compressor/horn, popup camper, 4 fuel tanks/87 gal, 2 water/22 gal, real bumpers, NP203/205 doubler TC) went bye-bye I'd want to replace it with a Cummins. But the narrower rpm band (25-2700 instead of 3000-3300) would make me want to have an extra gear. The ZF 6 spd S6-650 (now used on both Ford and Chevy diesels, though I imagine a Chevy salesman would rather feed his daughter to cannibals than allow a customer to order a "standard") has a 6th ratio of 0.72, taller than the ZF 5spd's 0.76.
