How do you "just add lead" to the gas? Is there some place where you can buy tetraethyl lead by the gallon, or do you mean one of those so-called "lead substitute" additives? I think it'd have to be tetraethyl lead to do the job -- a cup of birdshot in the tank wouldn't do much.
Adjusting the lifters (tappets) often means the valve seats are wearing rapidly, but I thought the consensus was that modern unleaded gas turned out to not really increase wear on the valves and seats after all, especially since the industrial 230s came with hardened valve seats. So maybe you adjusted out 30 years of wear, and the valves will stay good for another 30 years now.
