Welcome to Forum #41

This past weekend was more hectic than I anticipated, which delayed the refresh of the forum. I received a note from George Farrier of "Qataban & Sheba" fame. For those who never heard of George, he participated in an expedition many years ago to explore the ancient kingdoms on the biblical spice routes of Arabia.

One interesting thing being he did it with a fleet of Power Wagons supplied by Dodge. The expedition, along with pictures of Power Wagons can be found in the book Qataban and Sheba by Wendell Phillips , 1955.

I'm sure george will be on the lookout for any of the original Power Wagons from that expedition. Good luck George!

From George:
Subject –Yemen trip

After a very pleasant flight from Tulsa to Sana’a, Yemen we were met at the airport by friends of Merilyn. They brought the car right to the plane.
American Airlines does it right. I was able to fly first class. Our evening meal started with caviar and champagne and then served grilled salmon.
Watched the movie "Remember the Titans" on an individual DVD player. Really neat. We then went to a beautiful lounge where we had coffee while
our baggage was picked up and sent through customs.

After that we were taken to the AIYS (American Institute for Yemeni Studies) in downtown Sana’a. They have a beautiful hostel here where I have a
room. We will be here until April 20 when the rest of the crew will arrive. We will then drive to Mareb.

We spent yesterday sight seeing and getting our legs. Lots of walking. Taking it slow though because

We are at 7000 ft. We then went out of town and visited a famous palace that was carved out of the rock.

Last night we had dinner at the Holland Embassy. They showed some slides of some work they are doing in another city. They are restoring an
ancient Citadel. There were a group of tourists from Holland who is here on a holiday.

I am in great shape. I live on the fourth floor of a 250-year-old home that has been remodeled into a hostel for AIYS. No elevators so I have to think
twice about what I take with me for the day or I have to hike back up stairs. I should lose about 50 lbs. on this trip just from all the walking around.

Sana’s is a very large city. When I was here 50 years ago all that was here was the old town with a high wall around. No electricity, phones and
anything. Population then was about 20,000 people. Now there are over 2 million and the Old City is just outside of town. We will be going there
tomorrow.

I am having the time of my life. I feel it is Easter every day for me as I feel I am being resurrected every day.

Time to go to breakfast. I will write again in a couple of days.

My very best salaams,

George
