These trucks weren't built for speed, but for work. Top speed is in the 52-58 MPH area, with the 5.83 gears and 900-16 NDT's or the 4.83 gears and the 700-16 NDT's.

Some solve the need for speed by either using the 4.83 gears with 900-16's, or going to a larger diameter tire.

Once you do either you might find you need more engine, that's when the engine swap comes in. Those who opt for a small block MoPar can get the speed with out the tires, but if you go with the 4BT Diesel you will be looking for an overdrive, and 4.83 gears.

My '46 PW with 5.83's and a 218 (Plymouth) L-Head 6, and the 1100-16's seems to top out around 48 before it runs out of power. While my '53 M37 with 5.83's and 39.5" Swampers and a MoPar 318 will do 70+, I don't drive it over 60 for any period of time, the drive train just isn't designed for it.

If you like the looks, and want modern running gear, you might be looking at a body swap, it's not the preference around here, but to each his own. I'd rather take a 94 thru early 2000 Dodge Pickup and pull the front clip off and build my own to resemble the PW's, then see if one of Matt's reproduction beds will fit. However there is nothing wrong with a good ole original Power Wagon as a daily driver, as long as you understand the limitations.
