Very interesting. That's the first article on the tar sands I've seen that included really good pictures of all the things I'd like to see. They obviously make a hell of a mess of the ground, and "reclaimed" ground is nothing like the original forest and tundra. Of course in 100 years the trees and shrubs will grow back and it will probably be fine, and in 100,000 years there will have been several ice ages and nobody would know anything had ever happened there long ago.

I know a lot of environmentalists are really worked up about the tar sands, like those where were trying to stop the heavy haul trucks here a year ago, but I would think that should make them even happier to see more regular oil drilling in the US, including fracking the Bakken shale. There's much less mess pumping the oil out of the ground than digging it out, no matter how they do the pumping. Of course half those people think we could run our cars on pixie dust and moonbeams if congress would just pass a law requiring it.
