clutch pedal won't depress

Finally took my 47 WDX for my 1st real ride yesterday. thru all the gears, 2wd, 4wd, etc. it was pretty thrilling and renewed my enthusiasm for the ongoing (lifelong) project. however, as expected, the next problem arose far from the shop. I heard a jingling sound like a light chain knocking back and forth (or ball bearings rattling around) and then the clutch would not depress. One suggestion has been the clutch release bearing, i.e. throwout. how does that sound? or is it too vague a description to diagnose?
