I'm guessing the pinion bearing was trashed & that allowed the pinion to pull itself just far enough aft to trash the carrier. If you look close at the pic...it almost looks like the pinion is kind of worn from hitting it?
Maybe just the flash but I'm betting it's still hitting...no?
