Hi Manny, that's weird that it was in such bad shape? The steel lines must have rusted from the outside, for obvious reasons. I guess this is the reason they switched over to the plastic lines with those fancy connectors.
I agree, buy the lift pump to IP line from Cummins. Is it corroded? It won't corrode from the inside.
I'd also buy the lift pump from Cummins if it were me. I'm not sure I'd even change it unless you have reason to believe it's bad. I've never replaced one on a First Gen, although I've heard others that have. I think the best thing you can do if you want to do some preventative maintainance is to install another fuel filter, like a Raecor & only buy your diesel from large busy truck stops....never a 7-11 or the like.
Dirty fuel is a diesels worst enemy.
