Those pesky cheapo water outlets that rot away rapidly? They ARE the sacrificial anode, zinc castings. Right at the best place for electrons to get displaced, the water is hottest, with best flow.

By all means, add an anode. I have put them in the 'heater' plug in the head, if no heater hooked up. No harm to one, and if it dissolves it's doing good.
