Ggg, sorry I don't know where you are located - different areas of the country require different building practices - heating versus cooling. Radiant floor heat is great - it should be designed for your needs - tubing is denser near the edge where you have het loss. If you are looking at a slab on grade, look into shallow depth frost protected foundations. They came from Northern Europe, and are very efficient. Insulation need only be on the perimeter - the center is a waste of money. In Montana, dig down 4' at any time of year, and the ground temp is 46 degrees. So if you insulate the perimeter, there is very little heat loss to the ground. For walls, if you want a barn, go pole barn. The walls cannot be very straight, but it is the cheapest method to build. Next is stick framing, which allows you to have straighter walls, and wire/ insulate to conventional ideas. Other forms of walls are panelized walls, where they build the whole frame wall in sections, with insulation installed, and these are shipped to your site. Advantage is efficiency and quick to stand up - negative is cost. Next are structural insulated panels - similar to the last system, but harder to wire internally. These have a foam insulation core with wafer board glued to the outside. Cost is high, installation quick, very thermally efficient. Another method is insulated concrete forms - foam blocks that you pour concrete into. They act as an R50 wall, are impervious to hurricane winds, you can screw siding or sheetrock or plywood to them, there are methods to do wiring in them. You can heat the building with a match. I built a house with them, and it is so tight you have to have a ventilation system. Six inch concrete floor with 1/2" rebar on 18" grid will allow you to drive semis over it all day. Think about natural light from the south for heat and light. Good luck, Matt.
