got a friend in northern minnesota who has a 40 x 60 pole barn, fully insulated, with floor heat. He lives in it. Built a 10 x 12 living space in a corner, but spends all his time in the 'shop'. When he built it, he dug down below the frost line, lined the hole with insulation board, backfilled with gravel to 6" below grade, vapor barrier, 6" of sand with electric(!) heating coils embedded, and a 6" slab on top. Keeps it at 70°F all winter. Claims his electric bill is under $120/mo. Turns the heat on before the ground gets cold. Only downer: its full of Chevrolets.
