Will I live up near Rockford, rural county area zoned Agricultural. LOTS of windy days out here. I currently plan on one 16W x 14H door on one gable wall, but I will rough in another on the opposite wall in case I have the need for drive through access. I do plan on a bathroom with a small shower in case I take an accidental oil bath which has happened more times than I wish to admit. I am thinking of a "whole house" fan in the ceiling to extract fumes, smoke, and heat in the summer. The machine shop will be walled off so it can be heated and air conditioned 365 days a year. August gets extremely humid with the 10's of thousands of corn acreage surrounding me. Spring time most concrete floors sweat so much it looks like you just hosed the floor down.
From what I've been told stick built is much easier to insulate and modify (add or subtract doors, walls, windows etc.) than a pole barn. I looked into the spray in foam insulation and it is ridiculously expensive, and that is putting it mildly.
Moving; I have the best job in the world and I am a divorced father of a special needs child, I have no plans on moving, but you make a very good point.
