A hammer mill is a type of crusher. It has a rotating shaft with free-swinging,(hammers) attached. As the shft spins at high speed, the hammers, due to gravity, swing out away from the shaft to contact,(hit), whatever material is fed into the mill. They then cause it to break into small pieces. A hammer mill of this size is generally used for turning already small pieces of stuff, into a much finer material. The output of this mill would likely be sand size, down to dust.
Big versions of these are used in rock crushing quarries.
