I agree about the speed, and I remember you have the same gearbox I have. Mine needs a total rebuild, and I don't know what I'd ever use it for, but it sure seems like back in the days before hydraulics it must have been pretty cool. I never tried to use mine while it was installed because the bronze gear in the winch was trashed and the drive line from the gearbox to the front had some really sharp angles and the U-ujoints were about ready to fall apart.

I can't remember if that gearbox has a 1:1 ratio or if it gears up the output. Jared's setup gives him total control over the speed because he can put a small sprocket on the gearbox and if need be get a bigger than stock one for the winch. There might be a matter of how much tension the chain can take if it was geared down too much. As I recall, mine has a pretty small sprocket on the gearbox, so it probably drove a winch. If it was driving a generator or welder, it would probably have a larger sprocket on the gearbox and a smaller one on the welder, because they usually want to turn at 1800 rpm. I've never investigated the telephone truck closely, except to see it has an amazing number of gearboxes and PTOs, and there's a broken chain hanging down from the rear winch.
