Friend of mine is going to do this to his 69 w300. there was an article a few months ago on a company making a conversion kit using gm ecu and components. Draw back is you have to pull crankshaft to change crank trigger. The kit runs a couple grand, i know you didn't want to hear that, but everything i've understood is the intrument panel is tied into ecu so you have to use it. The kit does make a little over 400 hp with stock components.
