The Chrysler's from 51-54 had the integral bell. There's nothing wrong with them, but many shun them because of limited transmission options. The integral bell designis just fine, look at the flat head Fords. There's tons of them out there and they have integral bells just like many other older engines did. Some guys have machined the integral bell off and redrilled the mounting holes, though I don't recommend it. Looking at my integral bell 331, the metal doesn't look thick enough to do it and retain full strength. Either way, there are adapter plates out there to accept some more modern transmissions and another thing guys do is mill the bell housing off a 727 Torqueflite and use an adapter plate from Hotheads to make it all bolt together. Granted, it's all easier with the later style blocks, but it's not the end of the world with the early ones either. I've found that if I wanted to use my early 331 in a truck, I need a Dodge truck flywheel, an adapter plate, and a GM SM420 or SM465 4 speed. Easy way to do it and very practical...
