I agree with you...the only thing I do different is not using high build primer as a first coat. The thinner your coatings are the better. I prefer a thin epoxy primer as a base coat.. Usually the underneath of the cab, interior, dash, firewall...that's all I use. If there's any pitting I fill with polyester filler & I only really use high building primer if it was an area that was pitted heavily.
High building primers are great on exterior panels if you're going to be boarding the panels with like 100-120 grit & removing most of it & then I re prime with thin high quality epoxy before wet sanding.
The best primer I ever used was made my RM & was called 889. It was hard as a rock & thin. You needed to let it cure for about a week before wet sanding but it was great primer. That's the primer of choice most corvette & fiberglass car guys preferred....not exactly sure why & no idea if its still available.
The problem with heavy coatings is they shrink. Think of paint like cement...it's always shrinking & curing & the less there is, the better.
