Mark, cant answer your question, but I know the old one lung marine engines were direct drive to the prop shaft. To go in reverse you had to stop the engine, and if I remember correctly, just at the right moment restart it and it would turn the opposite direction, spinning the shaft backwards. I have read about times when the engine re-started, but due to improper timing restarted in forward instead with less than desirable results! There is a good reason transmissions were fitted on marine engines. I am sure someone saltier than me will chime in with the more detailed answer.
