Paul is correct and our old 2 stroke Fire equipment all had a flapper valve in the intake for manual shutdown if a runaway happened. I don't recall the new truck (Detroit Series 60)we got about 5 years before I retired having one. Not sure why not since you have a real potential of exposure to many different things that could precipitate a runaway.

One of my friends, who some of you would know if you go to Cummins sites, had a runaway which destroyed the engine. He had rebuilt the turbo but installed a seal backwards and was not prepared for that.

I have a cousin who used to be Shop Foreman @ Portland Freightliner and I asked him about this. He said anytime they did any kind of work that might have a potential runaway it was a 2 man start procedure. One in the cab starting it and the other with a piece of plywood to cover the intake with just in case. I have several rags stuffed by the air cleaner on my Ram just for that reason. Not sure I could be quick enough but I would sure try.
