No one can tell you what to do in your own shop, and many people do what they want when at work as well even when given information and proper safety equipment. But to inform someone of potential hazards created by using your compressor air as breathing air is giving them the ability to make an informed decision. Assuming your air intake for the compressor is away from the exhaust of a running engine, at minimum I would recommend the use of a ½ mask with cartridge filter with the combo pack of organic and particulate filters. Even if you use the hood with compressor air to keep dust away from face and giving you fresh cool air, this way the air is filtered after all work prior to you inhaling it. If you use the cartridge filters remove the filters from the mask and store them in separate sealed bags, this keeps the filters from continuously adsorbing organic from the shop air (gas fumes, thinners etc) and extend their use. It will also keep grime off your ½ mask. And always allow air to clear before removing any mask. When sanding inside with a filter mask the fine dust that creates issues with your alveoli (where air is adsorbed into the blood) will hang in the air for hours. To see this, place a clean piece of anything out after you are done sanding the day and see what has settled on it the next day, you are breathing that in but compounded by the cfm you breathe and for how many times you do it.
