How much are your lungs worth to you? Looking to save a little money now, will eventually cost you more in the end. Even as a hobby, the environments we consistently subject ourselves to, can catch up to us when we get older.

You can get a dependable system new or shop for a good used unit. I see them from time to time, and tell myself I should grab one.

I included Mc Masters catalog page and if you scroll to the bottom you will see the unit, and additional accessories. If you plan on working over a few trucks in your life, it would be a good investment.

Another thought I had is about those oil less air compressors. Think about what is moving in those pumps. It is a ceramic sleeve with a rubber edged piston, generating heat and wear. What particles are being pumped through the system just from that point? The heat from the air from the pumping into the tank, condensing as it cools, biological growth in the tank? I want to say that the general use air supplied respirators have pumps that are either ducted fan or diaphragm driven. Not to say the more expensive units run mechanical pumps, but they also have the proper filters and coolers.

SCUBA divers have their air "higher PSI 3500 to 4k" which is pumped by pistons, but pass through a number of filters and air driers before getting to the end tank.

Just be careful, as good intentions pave many roads, and you may be inviting more trouble which is what you are trying to avoid.
