There is a very good reason why some breathing air compressors are so pricey. For one the air quality is far superior to any "off the shelf" air compressor. Just because you can't smell oil or contaminants doesn't mean they are not present. The long term affects on your lungs may not be immediately noticeable like lung cancer. Reliability; you can't appreciate how important that is until your air supply fails. For my Job I use supplied air respirators on a regular basis in IDLH environments, there is no way I would consider any make shift air supply. OSHA; regular air compressors, air hose, and the couplers are not approved for supplied air breathing. If you have an accident, or illness related to or caused due to air supply issues you will have quite a legal battle on your hands. Having said all that I have seen some breathing air compressors at a reasonable price like $3-400.
