I can see using the belt drive to avoid having to plumb a real turbocharger into the exhaust system. On the other hand, there are electrically-driven superchargers these days that give you even more flexibility with the mounting and don't require a belt drive.

I'm not expert on turbos, but it seems to me that there are two advantages or a real turbo that you can't get with a belt-driven or electric supercharger. An exhaust-driven turbo utilizes energy that would otherwise go to waste, by using it to compress the intake air, so you're getting both more power and more fuel economy for free. Second, a real turbocharger compresses the intake air in proportion to the rate of fuel consumption of the engine, rather than simple the speed of the engine, so it automatically tunes itself to optimum performance. At high RPMs and light loads, you get less boost than at high RPMs and heavy loads, which is exactly as you want it. An electrically-driven supercharger with suitable software monitoring the engine speed, fuel rate, O2, etc could accomplish the same thing, but a belt-driven turbo will only give you compression in proportion to speed rather than in proportion to fuel burn rate.
