From your description of the shifter moving side to side, but not forward or back, I would think an inspection of the inside of the transmission would be in order. I say this because you should be able to shift through the gears with the engine off and not using the clutch.

Six or so bolts hold the cover on. Some of the bolts may be longer or shorter that the others, so pay attention to which bolts go where. Rather than just yanking the cover off, try removing it slowly, peeking inside as you do so to see if you can see where the shift forks are in relation to the gears. I know it is hard to make sense of when you aren't quite sure what you are looking at. With the cover off, study both the forks and the gears and it will make sense to you.

The gears slide on rails. nothing will fall off or come out of place, unless of course we have real problems--which I doubt. Dig around in there, gently, until you figure out what the obstruction is.
