I know it's shade tree, but don't underestimate radiator stop leak in fixing these kinds of problems.
A can of stop leak can save you a lot of work and outlast what's left of the engine life.
Some people think stop leak will ruin the radiator, but it won't have any affect unless the radiator is already in poor condition.
I like the kind that is made of small aluminum flakes, but I've had good luck with several different kinds.
I've saved a lot of time and money with stop leak and, as far as I've experienced, the repair is permanent.
