Several years ago I covered our kitchen countertops with copper. My wife liked the fresh look so much that she maintained that look for some time with steel wool. That process was very time consuming and she finally let them go. They slowly turned into the nice patina that copper will develop. You can accelerate that process by washing the copper with a solution of vinegar and salt, then slice a lemon in two and rub the copper with the lemon. After doing this, rinse the kettle, don't touch it with your hands, and let it sit. It will develop the patina you want.
