the combustion chambers are smaller. and that head has been shaved as you can see the fly cutter marks that it would never have from the factory. the compression raitos wnet up gradually after WW2 as the quality of fuel went way up. fuel quality has since gone back down since the 70s but even todays fuel is way better than what they had in the 30s when they designed these engines. higher compression and bigger cams make a huge difference if performance on 230s.
