The light is a resistor int he cu\ircuit, purring mow voltage into the alternator. Once the alt gets running, the bulb goes out because both sides are +, so no voltage flows.
But you do need either the dioce r the bulb. Without one or the other enough current flows backwards to the ign system that the engine keeps on going after the key is turned off. Guess how I know. ;^)
Jerry, are you sure the skinny white wire from the alt plug goes tot eh idiot light? The bigger red goes as close to the battery as you can get it. Cross them and ummmm, nobody know what probs you'll get.
