that is a good way to accomplish the same thing. diesel boat engines are a good source of low output alternators. vintage power wagon's power vert kit comes with a wiring harness like you describe. i liked the bracket that came with the powervert, but used the alternator i had modded by my alternator repair shop. when i added power steering to my command car, i had to space the power vert bracket away from the engine to gain the correct geometry for belt tension. it is fun to do this stuff. more fun when it works!!
