I remember reading this rule of thumb way back in the late 70's or early 80's. It may have been from Grandville King or Willie Worthy, or maybe in one of the Dick Cepek or Mickey Thompson publications.

I used to listen intently to my Grandpa, learning all kinds of important things from him. Like not to spit into the wind, or to place a block of wood under a claw hammer to increase the leverage when pulling spikes. But he was born in 1901 and he was never one to read much with only a sixth grade education. I am sure he didn't learn most of what he taught me by referencing some published engineering data. Maybe I should not have listened and taken it all at face value?
