Lower ratio (4:10 and 4.88) goes in the front axle, so that when going around corners they tend to even out because the rear axle travels less distance. Ford did this all the time, I think Chevy did too, Dodge not so much. IIRC someone here calculated that some negligable amount of tire wear on the front axle would balance the system out perfectly for on-road use, something like 1/32" or a few 1000 miles. But then again, that's when driving on dry pavement, and who the heck does that in 4WD??

I've never seen ratios that were more than 0.01 different, but they may exist.
